We are delighted to have Mariel join the Everyone Bikes team! We asked her 6 questions to learn a little more about her background and cycle experience. Meet Mariel below!
1. Where are you originally from?
I was born in Venezuela and grew up in Wisconsin in the USA.
2. How long have you been in London?
3. What is your earliest memory of riding a bike?
I was around 4 years old and I got a sparkly red tricycle from my dad. I remember him taking it out of the box and letting me have my first ride around the parking lot.
4. How and when did you get into cycling?
Since age 4 I’ve always had a bike but I got more seriously into cycling in 2009 when I did a charity Paris to London bike ride. I knew very little about road cycling and bought a second hand single speed bike. Big mistake!
5. What are your favourite cycling events that you have participated in?
I loved doing the Barcelona Garmin Triathlon in October 2013 with my close friend. It’s such a great city and the race route is wonderful. I also enjoyed the Prudential London – Surrey ride this year even though we cycled through the remnants of hurricane Bertha, but it was surreal to cycle in closed roads and come into The Mall surrounded by thousands of supporters.
6. What can you tell us about being a woman in the cycling industry?
It’s a very exciting time to be a woman cyclist. A few years ago during my rides in the countryside I rarely saw women cyclists. This year I think we are the majority! The industry is definitely paying attention and seeing this important new market so we will get better bikes and accessories, not the usual pink or black with flowers on it! I really enjoy being part of this movement and working in a woman specific bike shop. Let’s get more ladies on the saddle.
