Bike Safety Checklist

Bike safety is incredibly important whether it be in the park or on the busy streets of London. As dark and colder weather approaches, it's even more important to gear up and be aware of your surroundings. We've compiled a short list of what to check on before you leave the house and while you're on the road. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced cyclist, remember to put safety first friends!

BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE

✓ Make sure your bike is SAFE. Tyres are pumped & brakes work properly.

✓ You are wearing your helmet, something reflective and your bell & lights are working.

WHILE OUT ON THE ROAD

✓ Ride a doors-width away from parked cars.

✓ When approaching T JUNCTIONS take the centre of the lane so cars can't block your vision when you get in front of them.

✓ Look over your shoulder as much as possible! Do this when:

  • Setting off
  • Once you are moving so you know who is behind you
  • Before and after signalling to communicate with other road users

✓ Ride in an assertive position – not in the gutter! Apart from helping to prevent visits from the puncture fairy from all the road debris that ends up at the side of the road, this will make you more visible.

✓ Remember, the more signalling, the more eye contact and the more you are aware of your surroundings the better!
