Alex, founder & owner

Alex founded Everyone Bikes when he realised that female riders weren't being catered for in London cycle shops. This is his story...

"In 2007 I was tired of my unhealthy lifestyle and wanted to get fitter. The London to Brighton Charity Ride came along and work colleagues convinced me to sign up. I was wary of taking on what felt like a huge challenge but in the end I had a brilliant time and from that day onwards I was hooked on cycling!

A year later, my confidence had grown and I was taking part in longer charity bike rides and organised sportives. I loved cycling and wanted to get more out of my new lifestyle, so I decided to leave my public sector career to start up and co-own a brand new bicycle shop. Over 4 years, I channelled my cycling passion into the shop and grew it into a successful independent bike shop.

The moment things started to change was in Autumn 2012. I was shopping with my friend Natalie who was new to cycling and looking to buy a comfortable and attractive waterproof jacket for her daily commute to University. After visiting several central London bike shops we were disappointed with what we found. The choices were extremely limited, particularly when compared to the vast range of male clothing on offer! In the end, we had to travel to a specialised outdoor shop to find a practical and stylish female jacket.

That was the moment I realised how little there was available for female cyclists in London bike shops and I wanted to do something about it. As a male cyclist I've been lucky not to face the same challenges as my female cyclist friends (although men in Lycra intimidate me too!) and more than ever I feel it's about time to redress the balance. I decided to create a shop that would help and inspire women cyclists and when building the shop I made sure I listened to what women cyclists need and most importantly, want.

I haven't forgotten about the rest of the family; we stock an excellent range of men's and children's bikes and accessories. And now that Everyone Bikes is open for business I hope to see you down there soon!"

Claire

Mechanic / Sales Assistant

At the age of 4, Claire remembers cycling straight into a rose bush the moment her Dad let go of the bike!

But that hasn't stopped her from enjoying the sport. In 2011, she participated in the London to Brighton Bike Ride and fell in love with the freedom of cycling. Feeling inspired, she immediately signed up for London to Paris and ended up as the only woman in a fast group.

Claire admits when she first started cycling, she wondered why there were so few women and even fewer doing bike maintenance. For Claire, cycling is confidence building, freeing, fitness building, and a great money saver.

As a passionate cyclist, Claire loves sharing her experiences with women and men of all cycling abilities.

Mariel

Sales & Marketing Assistant

Originally from Venezuela, Mariel's first bike was a red tricycle which she says "made me feel free for the first time."

Since then, Mariel's always had a bike - from a tricycle to a bike with a bright pink wicker basket, via a mountain bike and racing bike. And she still gets the same feeling of freedom when she's out on the open road on her racing bike.

Mariel took up road cycling five years ago when she joined a Paris to London Bike Ride for charity. She's also completed triathlons, charity sportives, week long cycle trips in France and the Prudential Ride London Surrey 100.

As a female cyclist, she's experienced first hand the difficulties in finding the right clothes, accessories and bikes for women, and is more than happy to help and advise!
